AI Overviews are AI summaries at the top of normal Google results for some queries. AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational search where the results page is AI-generated and users keep asking follow-ups. Both cite web sources. For agency clients, AI Overviews mostly affect traffic on informational searches, while AI Mode shapes shortlists on complex buying questions.
A short history
AI Overviews launched in the US in May 2024 and by May 2025 were available in 200+ countries and territories. AI Mode reached all US users in May 2025 and the UK in July 2025, then expanded internationally in October 2025 to 40+ countries and 35+ languages.
The key differences
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Top of standard results, for some queries | Separate conversational mode |
| Format | One summary with source links | Full AI-generated page, multi-turn |
| User intent | Quick answers | Complex research, comparisons, planning |
| Follow-ups | Can continue into AI Mode | Built for back-and-forth |
| Client impact | Fewer clicks on informational queries | Shapes vendor shortlists |
How the two are merging
Google now lets users ask a follow-up straight from an AI Overview and continue into AI Mode with context carried over. AI Mode is still not the default search experience, so both surfaces matter for client programs.
What changed in 2026
In May 2026 Google added inline links, desktop hover previews, article suggestions at the end of AI answers, and community perspectives quoting Reddit and forums. Article suggestions reward topical depth; community perspectives reward real practitioner presence.
What to change in client programs
| Surface | Change for clients |
|---|---|
| AI Overviews | Answer-first formatting on informational pages; report citations and visibility, not only clicks; strengthen commercial pages that still earn clicks |
| AI Mode | Clusters covering the full buying question set; pricing and “how to choose” pages; genuine expert presence in the communities Google surfaces |
| Both | Strong technical SEO; AI feature visibility in Search Console where available, plus manual prompt testing |
For agencies
- Package it: fold AI Overview and AI Mode tracking into the monthly report as a new visibility section.
- What to tell clients: “Google now answers in two ways. We’re optimizing for both, and here’s how we’ll measure it.”
- What it takes internally: ongoing prompt testing across both surfaces and a reporting format clients understand.
