“SEO is dead” is a poor opening when a client already pays you for SEO. A better conversation explains what remains valuable, what is changing and which additional work is worth testing.

Start with a real business question

Ask how the client’s buyers compare providers and what information they need. Look for a genuine visibility or factual gap, rather than assuming every account needs a new service.

Prepare a small documented baseline: exact prompts, market, engine, mode, date and cited pages. Label it a sample, not a market-wide performance report.

Use this pitch script

“Your SEO work still supports discovery and useful public information. Buyers can also encounter answers before they reach a website. We tested a small set of questions relevant to your customers and found [specific documented observation].

“We recommend a scoped baseline to check how consistently that occurs and whether your public content supports the right answers. If we find practical gaps, we’ll prioritize the changes and report what we can measure. We cannot guarantee an AI recommendation, and we won’t treat mentions as proof of revenue.”

Replace the observation with evidence. Do not insert a competitor win that was never tested.

Handle the predictable objections

“Isn’t this already included in SEO?”

Some work is. Identify what your current agreement includes. Charge separately only for additional scope such as repeated multi-engine testing, new evidence work or added production capacity.

“Can you guarantee results?”

Commit to the deliverables and review process. Do not promise an independent platform’s output.

“How will we know it helps?”

Agree on panel metrics and business outcomes before starting. Review qualified inquiries, not just answer screenshots.

Make the first engagement bounded

Define the URLs, prompts, markets, outputs, owner and end-of-pilot review. Present the next decision: continue, change the scope, fold the work into existing SEO or stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every client receive the same pitch?

Do agencies need to build a new team first?
